If Fiat had been allowed to develop that then they could have got something special, the Rolls Royce Merlin was developed from the 'R' engine in the Supermarine S6B, the seaplane that had held the record before the M.C.72. ![]() The sad thing was Fiat were actually quite good at in-line 'V' engines, at this point (1938) the world air speed record is still held by the M.C.72 seaplane with it's V-24 Fiat engine. ![]() In theory this was because radials were more reliable, alas in practice it didn't work out that way. Mainly the C.200 suffered from an unfortunate decision by the Italian Air Ministry to specify a radial engine, specifically a copy of an old P&W engine that Fiat nailed together. ![]() Like a lot of Italian aircraft at the time it achieved excellent manoeuvrability by being slightly unstable and occasionally going into uncontrollable spins and crashing, but they fixed that (eventually) so it's a bit unfair to blame the airframe.
